Methanation reaction principle and process

 

Methanation reaction is highly exothermic reaction, the reaction equation is as follows:

CO + 3H2 → CH4+ H2O △H =-206. 2KJ/mol

CO2 + 4H2 → CH4+ 2H2O △H =-165. 0KJ/mol

The main function of methanation process is to convert CO and CO2(which are toxic to the subsequent process catalysts) from the mixture into methane, so as to achieve the purpose of purifying hydrogen, improving the gas calorific value of product and reducing environmental pollution, For example, in the ammonia synthesis industry, methanation is used to reduce CO and CO2 concentrations below 10ppm and prevent iron catalyst poisoning. in addition, methanation is also used for the purification and cleaning of natural gas.

Precautions and maintenance measures for use of catalyst

 

1) Requirements for the content of S in feed gas: ≤ 0. 1PPm

2) Requirements for the Cl- content in the feed gas: ≤ 0. 03PPm

3) Requirements for feed gas import volume of CO+CO2< 0. 7%

4) It is very important to maintain the normal operating temperature: The overtemperature of high concentration CO2 will cause the carbon deposition reaction. Over-temperature caused by high CO concentration at the inlet deactivates the catalyst, mainly forming nickel carbonyl. the production temperature can not be controlled too low, low temperature gas conduction is the main cause of methanation catalyst deactivation.
